ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – The Beach Cliff Garden Club has a rich history of civic activities and they aren’t slowing down yet. But they took a well-deserved timeout on September 16 to celebrate their 90-year milestone anniversary.
Close to 50 people attended a luncheon at the Cleveland Yachting Club in Rocky River. As always the room and the tables were decorated with lovely displays reflecting the talent and creativity the garden club members always bring to their get-togethers. But the club does so much more.
One of the club’s historians, Julia Grant, said, “We have offered many flower shows during our existence, and these have helped us to work toward our purposes of encouraging horticultural interests, education, and beauty.”
Grant and historian Doris Salisbury provided members with memorabilia at the luncheon including an agenda from the first meeting held in April of 1929 and also gave a presentation of club highlights over the years. Included was the following:
“In addition to flower shows, over its 90 years, (our) group has been involved in numerous civic outreach programs, including working with students at various schools in Rocky River, with children at the Rocky River Library and with other local garden clubs as an affiliate of the Cleveland Botanical Gardens.
“Our 90-year historical review also revealed service activities at hospitals and in other ways including the USO, particularly during World War II, as well as various projects with the plantings at the senior center in Rocky River. (Note: The United Service Organizations Inc. provides entertainment and social facilities to members of the military and their families.)
“In 1965, our group agreed to take on, for the city of Rocky River, the maintenance of the city's triangle of land at Lake Road and Avalon Drive. Since 1987 when the landmark Rocky River clock tower was rebuilt on this…site (following its destruction several years before in a storm at a prior location), the members of the Beach Cliff Garden Club have maintained the plantings around the Rocky River clock tower landmark, providing spring bulbs, summer flowers, and a holiday luminaria display.”
As a member of the club, Mayor Pam Bobst attended the luncheon and read a proclamation from the City of Rocky River for the club’s dedication to civic activities in the community.
Eleven pins for 25-year memberships were awarded. Smith said, “We (now) have 19 members with over 25 years, some having been members since the early 1970’s.”
The group was initially begun as a group of women who were neighbors with common, horticultural interests, said club president Maggie McIntyre, “but quickly evolved into an engaged and active civic organization, while still retaining its initial roots in a love of plants and flowers.”
Today, the club looks back but is always looking forward to more activities to benefit the community. “We are proud of our club and its meaningful volunteerism that focuses on furthering knowledge and interest in growing flowers and vegetables,” said McIntyre, “encouraging their use in bringing order and beauty into the homes of members, and promoting conservation and civic planting."
Clearly, a 90-year job done well.
