SOLVANG, Calif. - The nonprofit United Boys and Girls Club has opened an additional location to service a growing number of families in Solvang.
The Club opens its doors to the Buellton community in 2017.
Since then parents needs have skyrocketed prompting the club to open the new location.
"We are opening up our brand new elementary school on the campus, and we are serving kindergarten all the way through 8th grade now," said United Boys and Girls Club director, Amanda Hauptmann.
The Boys and Girls Club is an after school program that provides a safe and supervised place for kids to go after school.
"It's nice to know that our kids are taken care of and being academically taken care of and helped with their homework after school as well as the organized activities they are being exposed too," said Buellton mom Lisa Glenny.
The Club has a waiting list at times and wants to service the need.
They say some kids come from parents living in motels off of Ave of Flags.
They hope to prevent those kids from being alone in the motels after school.
"People that live in the motels, there are different pockets of areas or even families that we know there are lots of families in one location," said Hauptmann.
The new club location is being held here at Solvang Elementary school.
The location already has close to 50 members signed up.
"I love to be a part of molding someone's life to influence them and make positive change," said United Boys and Girls Club employee Diego Sanchez.
The program has no income restrictions and can be utilized by anyone.
"What we are doing here is really important, to have a place here that is safe and positive. A lot of parents come in and they are already really exhausted from working and commuting. So having a place their children can get there homework done helps a lot. That way they can go home and just focus on family time." said Hauptmann.
The Solvang club is open from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday.
On Wednesday they open at 1:30pm.
