Two Morris County men who say they contracted hepatitis A during an outbreak at the Mendham Golf and Tennis Club are seeking a combined $9 million in damages from the business.
Michael Ryan, of Mendham, and Edward Russo, of Ledgewood, alleged in a lawsuit filed in state Superior Court this week that they were hospitalized with severe illnesses after ingesting food handled by an infected employee at the country club. State health officials said one person died and 26 people were sickened in the June outbreak.

Ryan, Russo and their spouses, who joined the suit, said the club failed to properly store and handle food, adhere to sanitary procedures in the kitchen or supervise employees. The club “intentionally and recklessly” failed to warn patrons about their potential exposure to the virus, they said.
The Russos are seeking $6 million in damages while the Ryans are requesting $3 million.
Joe Kelly, the club’s general manager, said the business will not comment on any legal matters related to the outbreak.
The family of Dorothy Del Guercio, an 82-year-old Mendham woman who died after ingesting contaminated food, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the club last week. Hepatitis A, a contagious liver infection, is found in the stool and can be spread by infected people who do not wash their hands properly after using the bathroom.
