New York City FC have work to do this offseason. There are some aspects that are vital to be addressed. Here are their top three ways to improve the club.
New York City FC had an exciting and entertaining season. Yes, it may have ended in a devastating fashion, but there is no denying the team had an impressive regular season. The Pigeons finished at the top of the East with 64 points and were second in the league overall.
New players like Héber broke onto the MLS scene with 15 goals, while the team’s first homegrown player, James Sands, helped lock down the backline. Plus, many of the starting core are locked in on multi-year contracts, like Sean Johnson and Anton Tinnerholm. Despite the positives, however, NYCFC have many particulars to address, both on and off the pitch.
With that in mind, here are the three key areas that New York City FC must address this offseason.

3. Jesús Medina as a DP
When Jesús Medina was signed as a Young Designated Player for the 2018 season, he was signed based on his talent and potential to develop. At 20 years old, the Paraguayan had a notable resume with 74 senior appearances and 17 goals for his former club, Club Libertad. There was great anticipation for his future in New York.

In the 18 games he played, he started just six times. The lack of playing time illuminates Medina either is not doing enough in practice or other players are more able and competent on the pitch. Unquestionably, in his first two years, he has not played at the level of a Young DP.
Therefore, with two years remaining, NYCFC should do the following: downgrade his contract or sell him. Sure, it is evident Medina has potential, as seen during his brace against the New England Revolution in September, but the team though cannot wait for him to shine any longer. A DP contract should be used on a talented player that makes a difference to the team, not one wasting away on the bench.
