Liverpool beats Flamengo 1-0 to win its 1st Club World Cup title - San Francisco Chronicle

Roberto Firmino clinched Liverpool’s first Club World Cup title on Saturday in Doha, Qatar, scoring in extra time to seal a 1-0 victory in the final over Brazil’s Flamengo.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson’s defense-splitting pass picked out Sadio Mane, who fed Firmino for the goal in the 99th minute. Firmino, a Brazilian national, also struck in the semifinal victory over Monterrey on Wednesday.

By avenging the loss to Flamengo in the 1981 single-game version of this competition, the English Premier League leaders added the world title to their sixth European Cup collected in June.

• A continent away from Qatar, Liverpool’s EPL lead held at 10 points after second-place Leicester lost 3-1 to third-place Manchester City, which moved to 11 points behind first-place.

Liverpool has a game in hand over both of its nearest rivals and still hasn’t lost a league game this season. It plays Leicester on Thursday.

• Lionel Messi scored to close the year with at least 50 goals for club and country for the sixth straight time, helping Barcelona stay in position to keep the Spanish league lead entering the holiday break with a 4-1 win over Alaves.

Barca opened a three-point lead over second-place Real Madrid, which hosts Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

It was the ninth year Messi finished with at least 50 goals overall — 45 in 2019 for Barcelona, five for Argentina. He reached the mark every year since 2010, with the exception of 2013 when he had 45. Messi’s highest mark was 91 goals in total in 2012.

• Kylian Mbappe celebrated turning 21 with a silvery-looking haircut and two more clinical finishes as French league leader Paris Saint-Germain beat Amiens 4-1. Mbappe, whose birthday was Friday, has been involved in 15 goals in his past 12 league games — 11 goals and four assists.

• Martin Peters, whose place in English soccer lore was secured by scoring one of the national team’s goals in its victory over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final, died at 76 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
