Joliet Golf Club future in doubt - The Herald-News

The owners would not comment Thursday on plans for what became the Joliet Golf Club last year when the country club was dissolved and the golf course was opened for public use.

But one member of the golf club who did not want his name used said it won't open this year, and the owners plan to apply to the city for industrial zoning so the land can be redeveloped for warehouses.

Joliet Councilman Pat Mudron, the former president of the country club, said people who signed up for membership this year are expecting to get a letter this weekend informing them of refunds.

The new Joliet Golf Club continued a club membership program, and people had been paying for membership again in 2020, Mudron said.

"I heard that less than 70 had signed up for this year," Mudron said. "There's supposed to be a letter going out to them that their money will be going back to them."

Mudron said there had been rumors since ROC acquired the property in 2016 that it eventually wanted to turn it into warehouse and distribution space.

The Joliet Country Club was established in 1905. But it fell into hard times after the recession when it was not longer able to keep up bank payments on a newly built clubhouse. The club's financial distress led to its acquisition by ROC, which took over the bank loan.

David Silverman, attorney for ROC, said he could not comment but the company planned to make a public statement about the Joliet Golf Club on Monday.

The golf club is located at 1009 Spencer Road.
