MANISTEE -- When Chris Wucherer founded the Manistee Camera and Photo Art Club four years ago, she intended to keep the group limited to its five founding female members.

This year, the group will open its doors to the wider community by welcoming visual artists of all skill levels to participate, Wucherer said.

"We can all learn and grow from each other and support each other in our individual creative pursuits," she said. "I'd like to grow it into a really vibrant community."

The photography club will host its first open membership meeting from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 25. Wucherer encourages area photographers and other visual artists to attend the event, which will take place at the Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts in Manistee.

Wucherer said the decision to expand comes amid changes in the field of photography. The original members anticipate other local artists will contribute different skill sets and perspectives to the club.

"Many people have a really great camera on their cell phones; there are drone pilots and all kinds of ways to collect and gather images," she said. "So I'm opening it up, not just to traditional photographers, but also to cell phone photographers, video photographers and drone pilots."

In addition to amateur and professional photographers, the Manistee Camera and Photo Art Club plans to welcome digital artists to join their organization.

"While we love traditional photography, we also embrace, encourage and support digital creativity in all its forms, including digital artistry," Wucherer said in a memo.

The club strives to provide a supportive environment for photographers of all skill levels to stay creative and grow artistically, Wucherer said.

"The emphasis of the group is really about supporting creativity with kindness," she said.

Wucherer, the club's president, began her love of photography in 2012. Self-taught and reliant on online courses, Wucherer said she experienced a "steep learning curve." Now, eight years later she has gravitated toward landscape, architecture and macro photography.

"When I'm doing photography, I just feel more complete," she said. "It's all about telling a story."

To help others with their own learning curves, Wucherer and the Manistee Camera and Photo Art Club plan to provide educational opportunities through workshops provided by visiting experts as well as presentations made by the group's own members.

On May 16, the club will play host to professional photographer Don Komarechka of Ontario Canada who will lead a workshop at the Ramsdell Theater. The workshop, titled "Enter the Enchanting World of Macro Photography," aims to introduce attendees to macro photography by capturing refracted images within water droplets.

The photography club has developed a partnership with the Ramsdell Theater, and Wucherer anticipates future meetings, classes and seminars will be hosted at the historic institution.
