The Ottawa Kiwanis met Feb. 10 in Scott Hall at First Presbyterian Church. The minutes of the Feb. 3 meeting were reviewed and accepted.

President Lloyd Chapman talked about the La Salle County Regional Spelling Bee, which Kiwanis helps sponsor. It took place Feb. 8 at Ottawa High School. Ottawa Kiwanis has sponsored this event since 1952. There were 33 spellers who participated in the event. The winner was Jenah Sims from Northbrook School in Mendota. Chapman also informed the members the OHS Speech Team would be in attendance at the Feb. 24 meeting.

The vice president announced he would like to turn over his folder of information on Government Day to one of the members. Beth Findley volunteered.

Chapman introduced the speaker: Kelly Petterson, the marketing director for the Ottawa YMCA. She went over the history of the YMCA, which was founded in England in the 1800s. The Ottawa YMCA was started in 1956 and now has more than 4,000 members. She stated the YMCA gives scholarships for some of its programs. She also explained a little about the new evidence-based programming, which includes enhanced fitness for people with arthritis and balance issues or Parkinson's and a diabetes prevention program. The YMCA also is running a capital campaign now for future expansion.

The Kiwanis meet at noon every Monday at First Presbyterian. Prospective new members are always welcome. Call Chapman for more information at 815-433-2111.
