It didn’t take long for Jersey City police and firefighters responding to a car crash to determine the cause.
The senior citizen behind the wheel Monday afternoon never removed the anti-theft device that locks the steering wheel in place before he took off and struck the gate in front of a home at the intersection of Western Avenue and Zabriskie Street.
The 74-year-old suffered facial injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the crash report said.
Witnesses to the aftermath of the crash said the vehicle, a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville, was filled with items and debris and likened it to a hoarding situation.
The first responders arriving at the scene of the crash helped remove the man from the car and found the “Club,” a device that locks the steering wheel in place, was still in place. The device makes it impossible to turn the wheel.
The crash report lists the driver’s address as a home on nearby Liberty Avenue. The driver told police that he “did not remember what happened at the time of the accident,” the crash report said.
