An NFL team really has to display a major degree of incompetence to go 0-16. Only two teams have accomplished football’s Golden Sombrero (Por Cuatro): the 2008 Detroit Lions and 2016 Cleveland Browns. So which team will be next?
First up: a fond Potential 0-16 Club farewell to the Denver Broncos, who actually were proficient enough to beat the Los Angeles Chargers last week on the road, 20-13. The NFL still counts it as a victory even though the game was played in a soccer stadium. Happy Trails!
And we should also bid a fond Potential 0-16 Club Farewell to Jay Gruden, who won’t get a chance to win, or lose, any more games as the Washington Redskins head coach because he was sacked about 12 hours after a pathetic 7-33 loss Sunday to New England.
Funny how things go around in circles. The interim Washington coach is Bill Callahan, who once led the Oakland Raiders to the Super Bowl only to lose to Jay’s brother, Jon, the current Oakland coach. Callahan’s first game appears to be fraught with peril.
The Redskins (0-5) play in Miami on Sunday against the Dolphins (0-4), who were thought to be the worst team in the NFL — by far — until the Redskins, Bengals and Jets started sucking it up. Callahan is in a no-win position: if Washington beats the Dolphins, so what, they are terrible. But what if Washington loses?
One thing is for sure: at least one team will forfeit its membership in the Potential 0-16 Club this weekend, and if Washington and Miami play to a tie, both are out because they can’t do any worse than 0-15-1. The Jets and Bengals appear to be sure losers this week.
Shall we catch up on The Potential 0-16 Club, from bad to even worse? Here are handy links to the Week 4 and Week 5 previews.
4. Jets (0-4).
Next Loss: Vs. Dallas (3-2), Sunday, 4:25 p.m.
They’ll Lose By: Cowboys by 7½.
Last Week’s Loss: 6-31 at Philadelphia.
Most Winnable Upcoming Game: Nov. 3 at Dolphins.
Ugly Number: The Jets are averaging a league-low 179.5 yards per game. Their next opponent, the Cowboys, are averaging a league-high 452.8 yards per game — or more than two and a half times as many yards as the Jets. But they do get quarterback Sam Darnold back to stand behind a rickety offensive line this week.
Coaches Corner: “You do one game at a time,” Adam Gase said. “We just to have a one-game-at-a-time focus, we can't go past that. The good thing is, the first quarter is over, starting the second quarter, what are we going to do this quarter? We have four games coming up. We have two home games, two road games, let's worry about, `How we can win this one?’ Put all our efforts into that and focus on that game.”
3. Bengals (0-5).
Next Loss: At Baltimore (3-2), Sunday, 1 p.m.
They’ll Lose By: The Ravens are favored by 11½ points.
Last Week’s Loss: 23-26 at the gun to Arizona, which won its first game of the season.
Most Winnable Upcoming Game: Their next decent chance won’t come until Dec. 1, when they play host to the Jets (0-4), but they do play the stinky Steelers (1-4) again at home in a highly spirited rematch on Nov. 24.
Ugly Number: Cincinnati fell behind by two touchdowns with 7 minutes to play, but the Bengals scored two touchdowns and forced a punt to tie the score with two minutes left. But then the Cards drove 62 yards in six plays for field goal that crushed the Bengals’ very souls.
Coaches Corner: “We’re going to take a lot of shots right now — that comes with the territory,” Zac Taylor said. We have to make sure that doesn’t seep into the minds of everyone in this building. Let’s close that off, listen to each other and know that each of us can do a better job. That’s what it’s going to take right now.”
2. Redskins (0-5).
Next Loss: At Miami (0-4), Sunday, 1 p.m.
They’ll Lose By: The Redskins are favored by 3½ points over an 0-4 opponent.
Last Week’s Loss: 7-33 to the Patriots.
Most Winnable Upcoming Game: The Jets (0-4) “invade” FedEx Field on Nov. 17.
Ugly Number: The Redskins have been outscored by 78 points this season, more than any NFL team except the Dolphins (137). Sunday’s game could end 3-2 — or 52-51.
Coaches Corner: “We have to rely on the staff and the team and the leadership of our team to change the course,” Callahan said. “There’s no magic formula to all of a sudden going to a winning team. But I do think that working hard, preparing hard, I think those things are in the control of the players and the staff.”
1. Dolphins (0-4).
Next Loss: Vs. Washington (0-5), Sunday, 1 p.m.
They’ll Lose By: The Redskins are favored by 3 ½ points.
Last Week’s Loss: None, believe it or not. Bye week.
Most Winnable Upcoming Game: Nov. 3 at home against the Jets.
Ugly Number: You can either spend Sunday afternoon enjoying the beach or watching this professional entertainment product at HardRock Stadium. You can get a ticket to the game on StubHub for as little as $20, a cheap day out if it is raining or something.
Coaches Corner: “Our focus is really on the improvement and really trying to win the day – win the meeting, win the walkthrough, win the practice,” Brian Flores said. “I don’t – we don’t – really put much energy into any polls or any reports or anything of that nature. We just kind of try to focus on our specific job. The rest of that really doesn’t matter, to be quite honest.”
